(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 18, 2013 ) London, UK -- The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission will conduct a new study exploring the socio economic impact of gambling in the state. Jeff Lamberti, the Commissions chair, stated that the legislature mandates the study every eight years.
He explained that the study will be directed to the legislature because it will study the nature of social problems associated with gaming in Iowa. It will also explore if these issues have changed significantly in the past few years. Lamberti underlines the significant economic impact from gaming, but also mentioned the problems that come along with it, such as crime and gambling.
When Lamberti was in the legislature in the past, he was very involved with the first study that took place in 2004. The role of the commission is to make sure that the study is prepared for legislators.
Brian Ohorilko, the administrator for the Racing and Gaming Commission, stated that the types of questions to be asked still need to be determined. However, he expects most of them to be similar to the 2004 study.
Some of the questions from the previous study were: Is there an increasing number of bankruptcies? Are there increasing rates of crime in areas of gambling?
Up to $125,000 has been approved by the legislature for this study. Ohorilko stated that this study is not related to a separate study by the commission concerning the gambling market.
The process of beginning the market study is now underway according to Lamberti. He explained that the Commission will interview and select a company to conduct market studies. The Commission will not do anything until receiving the results because future action requires understanding the state of the current market. Many communities are interested in receiving their gambling license, which will hinge on the outcome of the new study.
The expected completion of the market studies is on February.
