(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 18, 2013 ) Albuquerque, NM -- According to a recent study commissioned by lawyers Slater & Gordon in the United Kingdom, many individuals are unhappy with their marriage but are too scared to divorce. The research uncovered that the main fears were emotional or financial hardship. The study showed that one fifth of the two thousand people surveyed felt trapped in their relationship and would only
divorce if their financial security were guaranteed.
Fifteen percent of those polled wish they had married someone else altogether. Twenty-five percent of the married people surveyed said they were no longer in love with their spouse and three out of every ten people claimed they have seriously considered separation or ending their marriage completely.
The reasons given for the unhappiness differed among men and women. Women mostly felt there was too much worry over money or they were not having enough fun anymore, while men were mostly sexually frustrated. One third of the women surveyed have considered ending their marriage. However, most women also fear being unable to survive financially as their biggest reason for not separating. Men were more concerned about the impact a divorce would have on other members of the family.
Head of family law at Slater & Gordon, Amanda McAlister said, There is still a prevailing attitude in society that you should stay together no matter how unhappy you are. Obviously divorce should always be the last course of action a couple takes, but the idea of hundreds of couples staying together despite being miserable because they worry about struggling financially is really sad to hear." She said, The reality is that divorce can be a liberating experience and studies have shown that children are happier if their parents are happy.
The Top 10 Reasons for Delaying Divorce:
1. I might regret it
2. I would not be able to maintain my lifestyle financially
3. I am too old now
4. I am not sure I have the courage
5. I am hoping things will get better
6. The impact on the family or need to stay together for the kids
7. I would feel guilty
8. I would not want to sell the family house
9. I am apprehensive about being lonely
10. I am frightened to be on my own
