Florida Group Tasked with Gambling Study Under Fire

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 30, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The Spectrum Gaming group won itself a virtual knock-out blow after it was announced the winner of a $400,000 contract to study the future of gaming and side effects of such activity in Florida.

The New Jersey-based consultants were levied with charges from the community as paid apologists by No Casinos in Florida, along with other anti-gambling activist groups. The group is said to be too close to the casinos, and thus those who seek to decry the information from the company are already lofting claims against the consulting team. Such groups claim that any study produced by the group would be propaganda tool for the casino gambling industry. No Casino and other groups have sent a letter to House Speaker Will Weatherford, as well as Will Weatherford and Senate President Don Gaetz.

The contract prohibits Spectrum's project from talking to reporters, however, if he could he would likely say Trust us: We're former journalists.

Spectrum employs economists, an addiction specialist, and other gambling regulators and experts for the study. However, three of the highest positioned team members are former Press of Atlantic City reports, and have tallied three decades of experience at the newspaper.

The perception of objectivity is, like in all studies, important to uphold. This study in particular holds a very important position as the blueprint for growth when it comes to gambling in the state. The gambling bill set to be voted on next year could change the entire landscape of how both Florida and nearby states handle gaming laws.

Lawmakers have already outlawed the storefront gambling dens following investigations by the Allied Veterans of the World charity. Over 57 individuals were arrested and the Lieutenant Governor Jennifer Carroll resigned due to the action.

In regards to the Spectrum Gaming group, lawmakers stated they used an open and competitive bidding process for this work, which is refreshing, given its history of no-bid deals, Krassner said. Since this is taxpayer-funded research, the vendor will have high expectations from the public to demonstrate objectivity and independence.
