(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 20, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- A Domain of Ones Own was in beta testing last year for 400 teachers and faculty. This year, the full program will be available to over 1,000 freshmen in September, offering them free web hosting and domain provided until the students graduate college.
The purpose of the program is to teach students about digital literacy and building a positive online footprint. According to the website, students will have the freedom to create their own subdomains and install LAMP-compatible software, set up databases and email address with their domain and carve out their space on the internet that they can control.
Tim Owens, an instructional technology specialist in the University's division of Teaching and Learning Technology, said in a blog post that he will work with a company like eNom in order to be a domain reseller. The program was inspired by several instructors with the department, and was originally launched as an independent project called Reclaim Hosting, for other universities to provide students with a free domain and web hosting services through a grant from the Shuttleworth Foundation.
Last year, HostDime gave free web hosting to Full Sail Universitys Internet Marketing degree program students, and Go Daddy helps fund over $100,000 in scholarships to students in internet degrees.
