Hanley works with the Maricopa County Sheriffs office and conducts surprise checks on over 80 homes of registered sex offenders that fall under the county jurisdiction. Hanley is a posse member and is a volunteer commander that works a handful of hours each week. While the posse members duties do not stop at checks, volunteers do spend a good chunk of time making sure that checks are handled twice per year.
At the end of the year, its certain that we will have hit 300 residences to see if theyre in compliance, Arpaio said, referring to the 300 total sex offenders under county jurisdiction.
Any sex offender found in violation is reported to the Sheriffs Office and the sex-crimes unit that will then process the absence as a Class 4 felony. The felony charge can bring a two to five-year prison sentence, according to Arpaio.
I dont think theyre going to like us knocking on the door, but we have to enforce the law, Arpaio said before deploying posse members on Saturday morning to begin the checks.
On the Saturday checks, the posse was able to make contact with 68 of the 81 that were visited. Each individual complied with the checks, according ot the Sheriffs Office spokesman Chris Hegstrom.
According to last years reports from a local news channel, there have been those among the 3,000 posse members who have been arrested for suspicions of sex crimes against children. Hegstrom states that background checks have been held for all current members, and there is no member who has been convicted of such crimes.
Hanely has been a member of the posse ever since the Jaycee Dugar case. It was unbelievable to me that a child could be kidnapped and held in a house for years in a backyard and nobody would know about it, Hanley said. And the guy that did it was a registered sex offender. Having four children, I thought that would be my worst nightmare. So, were making sure that doesnt happen here.
