(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 24, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- In Minneapolis the Saturday morning weather just was not playing nice with the athletes who were preparing for the Lifetime Tri Minneapolis that was held near Lake Nokomis.

The triathlon is held each year throughout the city along the Minnehaha Parkway. The finishing of any triathlon is a reason to have a celebration, but the finish life at the Lifetime Tri Minneapolis event had some special meaning, because unexpected obstacles had to be overcome.

The weather that hit the area caused delays that forced the organizers to make last-minute maneuvers regarding the course itself. Nothing you can do about the weather. It is what it is, Jarrod Shoemaker, a pro-athlete, said.

The thunder and lightning that began to strike and clap in the early morning hours of the event caused for a delay for all 3,000 athletes.

I think we warmed up three times, thinking wed have a 7 oclock start, 8 oclock start and then, eventually, a 9 oclock start, said Alicia Kaye, a pro athlete.

Rain was a less frightening, but also more problematic obstacle to overcome. The Minnehaha Creek had burst its banks, flooding portions of the Parkway. The water was bad, and organizers had to choose a separate course in order to fulfill the event requirements.

There was lots of meetings, quick decision-making, Flinn said. With the courses being a little bit wet, we wanted to be as safe as possible.

The outcome was a shorter overall race course for regular participants. Those like Peter Spencer, who is a regular at the event did not seem to mind the change one bit. He felt that while it was unfortunate happenstance that caused the change, there was a silver lining as well.

Were just relaxed, having fun. It kind of takes the pressure off, said Peter Spencer, who was biking the shorter course.
