(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 20, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- According to a long-term study by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh, both men and women in high-level job positions tend to outlive fellow employees in lower positions.

The study followed over 4,000 women and 14,000 men, totalling 18,000 people in management and professional positions for 15 years and compared mortality rates to the general population. The researchers found that men in higher positions were 50 percent less likely to die than men in the general population during that 15 year period. Professional women were 38 less likely to die than women of non-managerial positions.

However, the researchers found that women in higher positions towards the top of the corporate ladder were more likely to die of cancer than men in similar corporate positions. The researchers believe that is because women in high-level positions are more likely to smoke cigarettes, but the researchers did state that in general, women were less likely to die about 15 years earlier than their male counterparts in similar jobs, whether they smoked or not.
