Google Releases Search Charts

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 30, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- The literal top-dog when it comes to Google searches is, once again, the Pitbull. The breed has now taken the prize for most-searched breed once again, eclipsing the Bulldog and staying its in top spot for the fourth month. The German Shepherd, however, is looking as if it is growing in popularity after it surpassed the Siberian Husky to solidify fourth place in terms of Google searches.

The expansion of Google's Zeitgeist report of the most searched for topics has once again shown some surprises and some mainstays. Tom Charts are a monthly gauge of data and rankings in many categories. When it comes to actors, Selena Gomez took top spot for April, while Bill Gates, Steve Jobs both play second-fiddle to Oprah. When it comes to spirits and drinks, Jack Daniel's holds a rather commanding lead.

The data held by Google goes back quite a ways, but is only being released recently. Data has been noted since 2004, when Labrador Retrievers were apparently more popular than any other breed of dog.

The data has been fully compiled from Google's Knowledge Graph, and ties in keyword searches with standard questions forms.

Google released a statement attempting to explain the process: When you look at a chart of sports teams and you see the Golden State Warriors, those rankings are based on many different related searches, like [gs warriors], [golden state bball] and [warriors basketball]. That way you see which topics are most popular on Google Search, however people search for them.

The experts at Google, including Roni Rabin who works as a software engineer, made sure to note that algorithms are never perfect. He noted that anomalies can occur on the charts sometimes. Problems such as homophones can muck up the overall scores. For example, the 'artist' Pit Bull can bolster search results for canine breed. If only other breeds could get rap 'artists' to take their name.
