While the technique known as friction stir welding has been around for many years, until now it has primarily been used on aluminium. The skilled researchers and engineers at P&A International have been experimenting with friction stir welding titanium plates as part of its research.
We believe this development could have major implications in the industry. Its an idea that was once considered unlikely because of the physical properties of the ultra-light material. However our results show that it is possible, and this is very exciting for metal fabrication, said the P&A International spokesperson.
The welding technique uses a small pin that rotates and moves along the material, under more than 3,000 pounds of pressure, and spins at about 700 rotations per minute. The temperature then climbs to about 1,950 degrees Fahrenheit because of the friction generated by the rotating pin. As a result, this transforms the metal into a "plastic-paste" state, and the material is bonded under the high pressure.
The metal fabricator says that this process has the benefit of being more efficient than traditional welding techniques, which will ultimately put its customers at an advantage.
