(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 11, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Results released from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute regarding a study concerning car accidents and contributing factors, as well as impact factors within the insurance sector are said to reveal certain pricing explanations. Insurers are consistently looking for ways to keep the market totals in line to provide quality coverages that is priced at proper rates, and the new research may be able to assist those insurers, which could help drivers as well
According to the latest study, fatigue is the major cause of 20% of all accidents in the United States. That tally is in sharp contrast to earlier studies that stated the presence of fatigue contributed for a mere 1-3% of all vehicle accidents per year. The Virginia Tech researchers have now suggested those earlier tallies were simply inaccurate, and claims the accidents stemming from fatigue are also most common amongst the 18-to-20 age group. The fact is largely due to the chaotic hours that many college students and young individuals handle with works, school, and socializing.
The findings on fatigue may have wide-sweeping effects on the overall way auto insurance is handled. Fatigue has been long-considered a minor issue that only sparingly puts drivers at risk. If fatigue truly is such a pressing and continual issue with younger individuals, especially among the young drivers, there could be large price shifting. In the past many auto insurance companies showed support for initiatives that were keeping drivers from using mobile devices. The industry is now likely to work on way for not only keeping drivers focused on the road, but also keep them generally awake.
The study is not likely to make any effects on auto insurance coverage in the short term. The study account for a small sample size thus far. However, the study did use naturalistic method of research, which means they observed the subjects in real-world settings, and free from interference from outside parties. Thus, the study is preliminary, but still notable as it could lead to larger studies on the subject.
