(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 02, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Foster parents will now be hit with a rather unfair bedroom tax as bosses do not consider children in their care part of the family, according to a Sunday People story.

As of April, thousands of foster families in council homes will lose nearly 14% of their housing benefits for a spare room or 25% for two, even if the rooms are not empty.

The latest sting from the tax has will penalize the old, the sick, and the disabled.

Sarah Thomson was shocked when she discovered that she will be forced to pay an extra 12.60 per week for her foster child's room. Thomson looks after a 16-year-old boy, as well as her own son; however, she has been deemed to be under-occupying her three-bedroom home as her foster child does not count.

Sarah is a single parent, who gave up work three years ago to give a full focus to the children and notes: Its so hurtful, its as if the Government are saying my foster child doesnt exist.

Thomson stated that she looked after dozens of children, but now has to make up the money or face the reality of downsizing or quitting fostering.

The Sunday People worked hard to battle the unfair tax, as it highlighted the plight of those who are hardest hit, which constitutes over 5,000 individuals.

Labour leader Ed Miliband took the opportunity of the case to attack Prime Minister David Cameron in the Commons.

There are a large number of fostering agencies that will not let carers take on jobs, so affected families are forced to cover rent shortfalls with their weekly allowance of 130 per week per child.

That cash could be utilized for food, clothing, and making sure the child has basic necessities.

Robert Tapsfield, who is the chief executive of the Fostering Network charity stated Over 9,000 new UK foster carers are needed this year. Theres a danger these reforms will worsen the recruitment crisis. We know that these changes are causing some foster carers considerable anxiety and to wonder if they will be able to continue fostering.
