Hong Kong -- Regus, the global flexible workplace provider, is encouraging commuters to spend more time with their loved ones this Valentine's Day to boost both personal and professional relationships.
Spending less time on commuting leaves more time for romance and the other important things in life. According to a global Regus survey of businesspeople, this is certainly a priority: 75% of respondents said they would spend more time with family if they could save time on their daily commute.
For those who drive to work, cutting the commute spells environmental benefits as well; the same poll found that 46% of people think a shorter drive to work is the easiest way for firms to reduce their carbon footprint.
Valentine's Day marks the perfect opportunity to implement this kind of change, because the time saved, if spent on something more romantic instead, could itself be the perfect gift for that special someone. Research last year revealed that many people get it wrong when it comes to Valentine's Day gifts. The survey found a marked discrepancy between the present people planned to give and the one their partner wanted. Only 20% of people, for example, actually wanted flowers.[1]
A better way to put a smile on your loved one's face may simply be to spend a little more time at home not just on Valentine's Day, but at other times too. Among the ill-effects of working long hours and lengthy commutes are stress, loneliness and exhaustion hardly conducive to keeping the romance alive. A study in Sweden even found that couples in which one partner commutes long distances to work are more likely to divorce.[2]
