(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 06, 2014 ) Houston, Texas -- Because of the snow storm that has severely affected the city, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed is ready to taking emergency response to a whole new level. Friday's weather rose to 50 degrees and melted a lot of snow in the city, enabling government and private corporate employees to resume regular work. Schools remain closed but the traffic in the interstate was moving normally.
Apart from local authority programs, Mayor Reed has also asked assistance from the Weather Chanel. He aims to create a "weather-ready city" and also plans on engaging the airport officials in the emergency program. Airport facilities are often up to date when it comes to weather.
State authorities of Georgia have admitted and recognized the errors they have made in the winter emergency response last week. Several students were stranded in school buses and other stranded citizens were responded to with food by helicopters. These could all have been prevented had the emergency response and weather update programs of the state been prepared for the situation.
Despite the efforts of state government authorities to provide better response in such situations, residents are also encouraged to have their own emergency programs. Emergency kits on the road containing light sticks or other materials that can attract the attention of responders should be kept in the car at all times. Drivers should also be aware of the weather conditions and avoid driving as much as possible when the snow is continuously falling.
State Senator Jason Carter was disappointed at the mismanagement of the situation but Mayor Reed explains they did what they could at that moment.
