(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 05, 2014 ) Houston, Texas -- A tropical cyclone warning has been issued for the residents anywhere between the cities of Cairns and Mackay, Queensland. A storm tide is expected and emergency shelters have been opened Thursday morning. The cyclone will make its landfall on Friday.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the storm winds will be as strong as 120 km/h and there will be heavy rains.
The Townsville region is considered the center of the cyclone direction, according to Queensland Bureau of Meteorology director Rob Webb. Since Wednesday, gales have already been hounding down the coastal areas. Towns closest to the coast are also warned of rising water levels and storm surges are also expected.
Emergency authorities are advising everyone in the area to prepare for the storm and have their emergency kits on hand. Emergency kits should have light sticks as light sources, water, clothing, medicine and first aid supplies, as well as important personal paraphernalia. Light sticks are very important in case of power outages. In the event that rescuers are sent out to locate stranded residents, light sticks can be used to get the attention of rescue personnel.
Light sticks should be kept safely and stored properly to extend their shelf life. In order to ensure that no one is injured, residents are also advised to stay home and avoid any unnecessary travel or outdoor activities Friday and onward.
Emergency kits are also recommended to be stored in vehicles and outdoor sheds in case anyone should go out. Drivers should have their tools at hand in case they get stranded in the dark. Light sticks can be used to ask for help and assistance during these dire times.
