Speaking at an interview recently, Sharon Welch from the Banner Poison control center recounted, "We do get a lot of calls about kids chewing on them or they break open and some of the liquid goes into their mouth." Most of these accidents are actually caused by faulty glow stick designs. Glow sticks especially the ones given to small kids should have sufficient tensile strength to resist breakage when used as play toys by small kids. Glow sticks are not really harmful but have a tendency to cause a burning sensation when the chemicals inside are accidentally splashed on the eyes or inside the mouth.
At the center, nurses are taking a lot of panicked calls from parents - mostly about kids swallowing some of the fluid or getting it in their eyes. "It's not really that big of a problem. They may get a little bit of a burning sensation in their mouth, but usually if you rinse your mouth right away give them something to drink they do just fine," admitted Welch.
