main difference in heirloom seeds is that they are non-genetically modified, non-hybrid seeds which means they are open pollinated. The heirloom seeds which are harvested from heirloom vegetables will readily produce like kind vegetables while genetically modified seeds may not.
Many conspiracy theorists say that the seeds commonly sold in the stores are modified so as not to produce past the year they are planted and, therefore, make people dependent on the giant seed companies every year that they want to grow their own garden. Planting heirloom seeds means they can free themselves from that dependency.
"Last year saw a spike in survival awareness and that was probably, in part, the result of the doomsday theories surrounding the Mayan calendar" said Harmon.
"People were preparing for the worst, just in case the predicted disasters did come to pass and they were making preparations for growing their own food. While this aspect of the heirloom seeds business has cooled down some, lots of people are simply wanting to return to a more natural way of gardening and heirloom vegetable seeds are part of that scenario" he continued.
Whether heirloom vegetable seeds will grow as quickly or produce as uniform a crop as their genetically modified counterparts doesn't seem to matter to the people who are growing them.
