(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 20, 2013 ) Madeleine Daepp, a Americorps/Vista volunteer works to harvest sweet corn and other vegetables in the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station's Griswold Research Farm. The harvest she is helping pull are all to be donated to the Gemma Moran United Way Labor Food and distributed throughout the mobile food truck in the Norwich area in Jewett City and Groton.
Just as in The Giving Tree, tomato plants and sweet corn growing in the CAES research farm are to be given more than once as part of the production study on food given to the region's neediest residents.
Research cultivated by the farm, where a varied sum of agricultural horticultural subjects are surveyed, seeks to find ways farmers can produce more in smaller areas, as well as study pests and plagues on plants grown.
Once the corn is measured and weighed, the tomatoes have been checked, scientists are done with their portion of the work. The remainder is left to the 13 volunteers who work for the Pfizer's Groton Solid Dose, which is a unit that assisted the United Way of Southeastern Connecticut pick the goods marked for Gemma E Moran United Way/Labor Food Center in New London.
"It feels good to do something that helps the community," volunteer Joe Couture said. "We all have struggles and bills to pay, but at least there is food in the fridge. There are some people who don't even have that."
Farm manager, Robert Durgy, stated that the farmers are concerned about the ears of corn that are growing are too big and they cannot fit 60 ears into the bags that are sold in wholesale transactions to retailers. Lower bag totals means lower profits for farmers.
Durgy stated he used to deliver the produce to food centers himself, but this year volunteers have been doing the picking for him. "After the data collection is done, we want to see that the corn is going to good use, and this is our opportunity to give back," he said.
