Furniture Conservers in Maine Working in the Capitol Building

(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 17, 2013 ) Copiague, NY -- Jon Brandon and his wife Linda will be working to repair several pieces of antique and valuable furniture without replacing replica material, including the presidential chair of Richard Nixon and his office desk. Over the next five years they will be working in the Senate wing of the U.S. Capitol, restoring some of the most iconic pieces in the building.

Their company won a contract to conserve the furniture in the Senates various ceremonial rooms last year, and his just now beginning to take part in the on-site phase of the work. They have a two-week window to finish on-site work, before they will finish the rest of the work up in their studio in Brunswick. Maine.

The couple will also work in the Capitol researching the furniture pieces original look via old photos and receipts, as well as repairing objects while keeping as much of the original material and craftsmanship as possible, so as to not devalue the pieces.

The contract with the Capitol is worth between $30,000 and $40,000 every year for the next five years. In 2018, they will be allowed to bid again for the project. Brandon and his wife were selected out of five finalists and approved to examine the furniture in the Capitol building, then allowed to make a second proposal.
