Laser Scientists Using Diamonds in Line of Work

(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 17, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- New research from the University of Strathclyde shows that harnessing the properties of a domands can help develop a new generation of lasers that could better the treatment of skin complaints, eye conditions and improve pollution monitoring for aeronautical engineering.

The team at Strathclyde has developed a new type of high-performance Raman laser that uses diamonds to produce light beams with more power with a wider range of colors than current Raman lasers.

Although other researchers in Australia are working on innovative diamond-based technology, the team at Strathclyde has already achieved two major firsts in diamond lasers. First, they have created the first ever tunable Raman laser, where the light can be adjusted to meet different needs, which could possibly lead to minimizing the damage around surrounding tissues.

Also, theyve created the first continuously operating Raman laser. Before this, lasers could provide only short pulses of light, which were unsuited for medical and other complications, which could damage delicate structures in the eye.

The team has been working closely with Element Six, a UK-based firm, which manufactures fabricated diamonds. Not only could this help the scientists create lasers for cheaper, but also can be designed to have precise optical properties.
