(EMAILWIRE.COM, August 07, 2013 ) Las Vegas, Nevada -- When optimizing websites for search engines, some practices are considered "black hat", meaning that they are prohibited by search engines and could result in penalties to a website's ranking. Over the years, what has been considered black hat has continuously changed. In a recent blog post, the advice website Holistic Online Marketing takes a look at search engine optimization (SEO) tactics from a modern standpoint in attempt to define what is considered black-hat SEO by today's standards.
Holistic Online Marketing explains that some SEO tactics which used to be considered "white hat" are now considered black hat. However, some of these tactics, such as sending bloggers free items in hopes of getting a link, are still very effective.
Because search engines have cracked down on any deliberate attempts to manipulate search engine rankings, nearly all SEO tactics could be considered black hat. Even SEO tactics which are approved by search engines today could end up being considered black hat in the future. Holistic Online Marketing explains that it all comes down to level of risk: "There are no inherently black-hat SEO techniques. A technique becomes black hat when it is done purely with the attempt of manipulating the search engines rather than providing a valuable service or experience for users."
The article goes on to say that marketers need to assess the riskiness of each SEO tactic they use. If the tactic could be perceived as spam, then marketers will have to decide whether the risk of being penalized in the future is worth the amount of traffic which could be gained through the technique.
