(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 29, 2013 ) Solihull, West Midlands -- It's strange how things come aroundin time. One of the latest must-haves in the home is a showerhead with built-in LEDs that change the color of the water as you shower just as if you were standing in a forest pool, watching the water cascade through the sunshine to create a myriad of rainbow colors in the drops.

Go back a few thousand years, and that's exactly how our ancestors would have taken their first showers but it all rather depended on finding a suitable waterfall and the chances

of finding one near your home was pretty slim.

It was the ancient Egyptians and Mesopotamians who first brought concept of a waterfall into their homes with rooms dedicated to bathing under water poured from jugs by a retinue of slaves and servants.

Shower heads
But it was the Greeks, and later the Romans, who were to bring the first shower technology to bear lead pipes and aqueducts replaced those servants presumably causing many redundancies. The Greek bath houses even had elaborate shower heads carved from stone in the shape of exotic beasts who would spew water from their mouths. Shared by rich and poor alike, showering became an almost daily routine for many. But the first Shower Age did not last long. The spread of Christianity along with the belief that bathing was sinful meant that bathing and all the early technology that came with it fell into disrepair.

It wasn't until the late 18th century that there was a resurgence of interest. Europe had suffered a number of catastrophic plagues and doctors were beginning to make the link between disease and personal hygiene. Rousseau, the Swiss philosopher recommended bathing children in ice-cold water, winter and summer and John Wesley, the founder of Methodism and originator of the phrase "Cleanliness is next to Godliness", said that cold baths had been known to cure blindness and leprosy, as well as "hysterick cholik" in ladies.

Green machine
The first patents for showers were granted in the 19th century the early ones were self-contained contraptions in which water was pumped (by hand) from a shallow basin in which the bather stood, up to an overhead tank from which it cascaded down again on the bather. A green machine if ever there was one!

It was in 1860 that the first plumbed-in showers appeared, not in homes, but in the barracks of Napoleon's army. The idea rapidly caught on and was adopted by armies across Europe and then into public schools and eventually public bath houses.

Indoor plumbing transformed the domestic shower scene and exciting new developments like the Needle Bath were all the rage. Like a modern power shower this shower enclosure had vertical pipes with needle jets pointing inwards at the victim.

Which brings us right back to where we started. Today there are electric showers, power showers, steam showers and rib showers the choice is wider than ever. The modern showers can relax you or invigorate you or even, with the latest 12 LED Showerheads, transport you back to those dreamy days in the forest pool.
